Pretty wild, now that I think about it, because there are an infinite number of frequencies between any two given frequencies if you don't put a limit on the decimal places used to measure them. (If you slid your finger on a piano keyboard, you'd only hear A - B - C - D - E because you'd miss the black keys.) But if you played an open A-string and then could smoothly turn the tuning peg, tightening the string until it produced an E instead (or alternately, slide the fretting finger on a fretless instrument like a violin) you'd hear A->E where the arrow line represents every possible frequency between A and E. A glissando quickly ripples through the notes between the start note and end note, but portamento slides through every frequency in between, including those between the notes of the keyboard.įor example, if you fret an A on a guitar string and slide the fretting finger up to E, that's a glissando, because you'll hear A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D# - E, just really fast. The swirly effect IMO mostly comes from an effect called portamento that's built into most synthesizers and connects different notes by sliding up or down the frequencies from one to the next. It does sound a lot like a theremin and is probably modeled on one's sound, but those are rare and difficult to play, especially at that tempo. It's almost certainly just a synthesizer.
