These areas are off the Western coast near previously existing producing gas fields. The Victorian Government opened up further state waters for offshore gas exploration in 2018.On 1 July 2021, the moratorium on onshore gas exploration and drilling in Victoria was lifted, reopening the state to the threat of onshore gas extraction.While the ban on fracking (hydraulic fracturing to extract unconventional gas, including coal seam gas, shale and tight gas) has been permanently enshrined in the Victorian constitution since 2020, the threat of gas development remains on several fronts:
